Incident Details
A flight operating between Kiev-Borispol and Ivano-Frankivsk ended with the aircraft coming to rest broken in two after landing on an agricultural airstrip. The crew, who had never previously flown into Ivano-Frankivsk, experienced poor visibility during the approach. They misidentified an agricultural airstrip located 17 kilometers from the intended destination as the Ivano-Frankivsk International Airport and landed on it.
The runway at the agricultural airstrip was only 500 meters long. After touchdown, the aircraft overran the runway and came to rest in a ravine, causing the fuselage to break into two sections. Despite the severity of the damage, all 65 occupants evacuated the aircraft without injury. The aircraft itself was written off due to the damage sustained.
Probable Cause
The official investigation determined the probable cause to be poor flight preparation on the part of the crew, who landed on the wrong airport and on an airstrip that was inappropriate for such an aircraft.
