What happened
On December 2, 2024, at approximately 06:30 UTC, a runway incursion occurred at Ministro Pistarini International Airport (Ezeiza) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The incident involved two narrow-body aircraft: a Boeing 737-86J, registration EC-MUB, operated by FB Líneas Aéreas S.A., and a Boeing 73.7 MAX 8, registration PS-GPN.
Following instructions from air traffic control, the crew of EC-MUB began taxiing via taxiway Delta toward the threshold of runway 29 for a scheduled commercial flight to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During this taxiing phase, the aircraft crossed the active runway 29 at the intersection with taxiway Delta. At the same moment, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 was on its final approach for landing.
Following the crossing, the EC-MUB came to a stop on taxiway Delta. The crew was subsequently instructed to shut down the engines. The aircraft was then towed to taxiway Golf before being able to proceed under its own power to position 50A. The arriving PS-GPN completed its landing without further incident.
The investigation
The Argentine Transportation Safety Board (JST) conducted an investigation into the event, which was classified as a serious incident. The investigation focused on the sequence of movements between the two aircraft and the coordination of surface movements at the intersection of runway 29 and taxiway Delta. The JST examined the flight data, air traffic control instructions, and the operational context of both the departing and arriving flights.
