What happened
On May 18, 2023, at 18:34 UTC, a Boeing 737-887, registered as LV-GVA, was performing a scheduled commercial flight from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery to Teniente Luis Candelaria International Airport in San Carlos de Bariloche. During the approach phase of the flight, the crew encountered an apparent erroneous indication regarding the aircraft's flap system. Due to this technical discrepancy, the flight crew declared an emergency.
The aircraft subsequently completed its landing at Bariloche International Airport without further incident. There were no injuries reported among the six crew members or the 165 passengers on board, and the aircraft sustained no damage.
The investigation
The investigation into the incident focused on the malfunction or failure of a non-engine system or component. The National Directorate for the Investigation of Aeronautical Occurrences (DNISAE) conducted a documentary investigation following established civil aviation accident and incident investigation procedures. The inquiry reviewed the circumstances surrounding the flap system indication and the emergency declaration.
Findings
The investigation established that the primary cause of the emergency declaration was a malfunction or erroneous indication within the aircraft's flap system. The technical discrepancy occurred during the approach phase of the flight, necessitating the emergency procedures.
Following the review of the available documentation and the circumstances of the event, the investigating authority determined that the findings did not present new lessons or information significant enough to contribute to the improvement of the State's operational safety, leading to the closure of the file.
