Engine failure and fire during landing at Don Mueang Airport

No fatalities • Bangkok-Don Mueang, Thailand • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced an engine component failure and subsequent fire during its final approach to Bangkok, resulting in the destruction of the airframe.

What happened

While traveling toward Bangkok, approximately 450 km from its destination, the flight crew notified air traffic control regarding vibrations originating from the third engine. The aircraft continued its journey without further incident until the descent phase began.

During the final approach to runway 21, a propeller blade separated from the number three engine. This mechanical failure triggered intense vibrations and an immediate fire within the engine nacelle. As the aircraft type touched down, the structural integrity of the right main landing gear failed, causing it to collapse. The plane skidded along the runway for several yards before the fire consumed the vessel. All 44 occupants managed to evacuate the aircraft safely before the plane, registered as 'Venlo', was completely destroyed by the flames.

Findings

Investigations determined that a propeller blade failed during flight shortly before the arrival at Don Mueang Airport. This failure led to the loss of function in the third engine and ignited an uncontrollable fire in the nacelle. The subsequent collapse of the right main landing gear upon touchdown was a direct result of the damage caused by the fire.

Probable cause

The separation of a propeller blade from the third engine caused an unextinguishable fire and subsequent landing gear failure.
