What happened
Before departing from Bali for its destination in Surabaya, the flight crew received notification that the thrust reverser on the left engine was non-operational. The flight proceeded without incident until the arrival phase. Upon landing on runway 10, the crew followed standard operating procedures for the approach and touchdown.
Immediately after the aircraft made contact with the runway, the crew engaged the thrust reverser. During this maneuver, the aircraft began to drift toward the right side of the runway. Although the crew attempted to correct the directional deviation, the aircraft type veered completely off the paved surface. The excursion caused the aircraft to lose its undercarriage before the vehicle eventually came to a stop in a nearby grassy area.
Findings
- The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
- Despite the severity of the excursion, all 144 occupants managed to evacuate the aircraft without injury.
- The activation of the thrust reverser coincided with the loss of directional control.
