What happened
A scheduled domestic flight departing from Osaka International Airport was en route to Matsuyama Airport on the evening of the accident. The flight, operating with a delay of approximately 85 minutes, proceeded through various navigation points including Takamatsu NDB and Kure Point. During the descent phase, the crew expressed concerns regarding the operational status of the Matsuyama N/D B, which had briefly been inactive. After receiving clearance from Iwakuni Approach Control to proceed via the Iwakuni-NDB, the aircraft descended toward its destination.
Upon approaching Matsuyama Airport, the crew established contact with the tower at 20:24:03 hours and received weather updates for Runway 31. While performing a turn on the base leg, the pilot confirmed that the landing gear was down and checked, receiving clearance to land. However, during the final approach, the aircraft's altitude was noted to be higher than standard, and the plane touched down approximately 460 meters past the runway threshold. Following a short ground roll of about 170 meters, the aircraft became airborne again, deviating slightly left of the centerline as it passed the Runway 13 threshold.
The crew initiated a go-around at 20:27:30 hours. During the subsequent climb, the flight path angle was observed to be shallower than typical for such a maneuver. After reaching an altitude between 230 and 330 feet, the aircraft began a left turn. Shortly after this turn, the plane entered a descent and crashed into the water at a flight path angle of approximately 5 degrees. The impact occurred roughly 450 meters northeast of where the empennage was later found. There were 0 survivors reported in the wreckage.
Findings
Investigation into the accident revealed that the aircraft touched down significantly beyond the runway threshold during its initial approach, necessitating the aborted landing. During the go-around, the aircraft maintained a shallower climb angle than usual and lost altitude after initiating a left turn. At the moment of impact, the aircraft was in a nose-down and left-bank attitude with the flaps and undercarriage fully retracted. The specific reason for the loss of altitude during the maneuver remained undetermined.
