Fatal aircraft accident near Shyganak

9 fatalities • Shyganak, Kazakhstan • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft crashed in a desert region west of Shyganak following unusual flight maneuvers and the unauthorized presence of a passenger in the cockpit.

What happened

During the initial climb phase after departing from Shyganak, an unauthorized individual entered the cockpit to sit alongside the two pilots. Following the closure of the cockpit door, the aircraft began performing irregular flight maneuvers. Approximately three minutes into the flight, while maintaining an altitude of roughly 150 meters, the crew altered the heading to 270 degrees.

The aircraft subsequently crashed in a desert area situated approximately 2 km west of the local village. The impact occurred at speeds estimated between 210 and 220 km/h, after which the wreckage came to rest 110 meters from the initial impact point. The accident resulted in six fatalities, including both pilots, and four serious injuries among the passengers. However, three of the four survivors later succumbed to their wounds.

Findings

Investigations into the crash highlighted significant lapses in flight organization, specifically noting that the crew permitted a passenger to occupy the cockpit without proper authorization. During the period of erratic maneuvering, the engine was set to full power, which may have resulted in partial submersion or flooding. The aircraft's flight path involved a pitch down to 5 degrees followed by a right bank reaching an angle of 40 degrees prior to striking the ground.

Probable cause

The unauthorized entry of a passenger into the cockpit and subsequent improper flight management led to erratic maneuvers and a loss of control.
