What happened
During a nighttime approach to Quito-Mariscal Sucre Airport, an aircraft was operating under conditions of poor visibility. While on short final approach, the crew did not maintain sufficient altitude, leading to a collision with a ten-story building that was under construction. The impact occurred approximately 3 km before the aircraft could reach runway 35.
Findings
- The crash resulted in 10 fatalities among the occupants of the aircraft and 3 fatalities on the ground.
- The primary factor in the accident was the failure to maintain adequate altitude during the final descent phase.
