Mumbai Airport to start phased redevelopment of Terminal 1B in 2027
Mumbai International Airport will begin phased redevelopment of Terminal 1B's North Section in January 2027, a project expected to temporarily affect about 9% of annual passenger traffic.

Mumbai International Airport will start a phased redevelopment of the North Section of Terminal 1B in January 2027, the operator has said. The work is expected to temporarily affect roughly 9% of the airport's annual passenger traffic.
Mumbai International Airport Limited, which is operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, said the redevelopment follows safety concerns about ageing infrastructure at Terminal 1. The airport handles around 55 million passengers a year, of whom about five million use the part of Terminal 1 that will be taken out of service during the work. The operator said 91% of passenger traffic will be unaffected in the first phase.
The North Section of Terminal 1B accounts for about one-third of Terminal 1's capacity and will be demolished in that first phase. Airlines using the affected facilities have been offered the option of temporarily shifting services to Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Once the redevelopment is complete, Terminal 1's annual capacity is expected to rise by 33%, from roughly 15 million passengers to 20 million. Consultations with airlines over the terminal's future have been under way since 2020. The plans were also put to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India and folded into the approved tariff framework.
