Overview
During a training flight intended to remain in the traffic pattern, the aircraft experienced an engine power loss shortly after takeoff. The engine initially lost power at approximately 150 to 200 feet above ground level (AGL) and subsequently failed completely. The flight instructor assumed control of the aircraft.
Event Description
Confronted with trees and power lines in the flight path, the instructor performed a descending turn of about 150 degrees to attempt a forced landing. As the aircraft was rolling out of the turn, it struck the terrain with sufficient force to cause substantial damage to the fuselage and one wing.
Post-Accident Inspection
A post-accident inspection, conducted under the supervision of a Federal Aviation Administration Airworthiness Inspector, identified that the engine-driven fuel pump had failed. When the engine was supplied with an alternate source of fuel during the inspection, it operated without interruption.
