What happened
While positioned on the apron at Sofia-Vrazhdebna Airport, the aircraft type underwent deicing procedures and snow removal. Following these preparations, the crew received clearance to taxi toward runway 10 for departure. During this period, the runway was temporarily unavailable due to ongoing snow clearing operations.
Once the runway was reopened, the crew was cleared for takeoff. Immediately after departing from runway 10, the aircraft struggled to maintain altitude. The plane subsequently entered a stall and impacted a bank of the Iskar River, which is situated near the airport. The accident resulted in three fatalities, including the copilot and two passengers who drowned. Other individuals on board were rescued, with some sustaining injuries.
Findings
Investigations determined that the duration between the completion of deicing and the actual takeoff was excessive. This delay allowed a significant layer of snow to build up on the wings, fuselage, and other essential flight surfaces. The primary factor in the accident was the accumulation of snow on critical surfaces due to an extended hold over time. Additionally, it was noted that the crew did not request a follow-up deicing procedure to address the new snow buildup.
