What happened
On 31 May 2017, a Boeing 737-300, registered as PK-CJC, was performing a scheduled passenger service operated by PT. Sriwijaya Air. The flight originated from Makassar, with a transit stop in Sorong, and was destined for Rendani Airport in Manokwari. The aircraft was carrying 146 passengers and 6 crew members.
During the approach to Manokwari, the flight crew maintained communication with Rendani Tower. After descending through 13,000 feet, the crew reported operating under Visual Meteorological Conditions. As the aircraft approached runway 35, the pilot in command took control of the aircraft from the second in command. The crew reported that the runway was in sight and received landing clearance, noting the runway surface was wet.
At an altitude of approximately 550 feet, the pilot instructed the activation of the windshield wipers. Between 500 and 200 feet, the aircraft's Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) issued "Sink Rate" and "Pull Up" alerts. Upon touching down at 2350 UTC, the aircraft utilized spoilers and thrust reversers, but the crew noted a lack of significant deceleration. The aircraft subsequently overran the runway, coming to a stop roughly 20 meters beyond the pavement end. There were 0 fatalities and 0 injuries as all occupants evacuated the aircraft safely.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced an overrun on a wet runway.
- EGPWS warnings regarding sink rate and pull-up were triggered during the final descent phase.
