What happened
During an approach to Pontianak, the aircraft encountered challenging weather conditions characterized by heavy rainfall and significant turbulence. As the flight proceeded to land on the wet surface of runway 15, the aircraft began to skid. The movement continued until the plane veered off the left side of the runway and entered a muddy field.
As the aircraft moved into the soft terrain, the nose landing gear was separated from the structure. Both main landing gears subsequently sank into the mud, causing the engines to make contact with the ground. Despite the impact and the structural damage to the airframe, all 163 occupants were successfully evacuated from the aircraft without injury.
Findings
At the time of the incident, meteorological reports indicated low visibility of 600 metres and unstable atmospheric conditions, including wind from 230 degrees at 22 knots. Cloud layers were present at 700 and 900 feet, with cumulonimbus clouds situated above the terrain. The unstable approach caused by heavy rain and turbulence was the primary factor leading to the loss of directional control on the wet runway.
