Incident Details
A flight arriving from Dniepropetrovsk initiated an approach to Moscow-Sheremetyevo Airport's runway 25R. The copilot, who was handling the landing, configured the flaps at 22° during the approach. After touchdown, the copilot began the braking procedure, but the aircraft failed to decelerate as expected.
Sequence of Events
When the normal braking system proved ineffective, the crew activated the emergency braking systems. However, these also produced no noticeable effect on the aircraft's speed. As the airplane neared the end of the runway at a speed of 70 knots, the copilot turned to the right in an attempt to veer off the paved surface. During this maneuver, the aircraft entered a ground loop, departed the runway, and contacted a grassy area. The impact caused the undercarriage to separate from the aircraft before it came to rest.
Occupants and Damage
All 34 occupants on board evacuated the aircraft without injury. The aircraft itself sustained damage beyond repair.
Investigation
The official investigation into the incident focused on the braking system. The probable cause stated in the findings is that failure of the brakes is suspected.
