What happened
While traveling toward Adana, the pilot provided updates regarding the flight's progress, noting that the aircraft had passed Aksaray and was expected to reach its destination at 1740 local time. At 1728, the crew reported being at flight level 175 and requested permission to begin their approach. Air traffic control subsequently cleared the flight to descend to 5,000 feet, with instructions to notify controllers upon passing through 8,000 feet and 7,000 feet.
Shortly after these communications, while flying at an altitude of approximately 6,800 feet, the aircraft collided with the slope of Mt Medetsiz. The accident occurred roughly 87 km north of Adana Airport. There were 11 fatalities among the occupants of the plane.
Findings
Investigations into the crash revealed that the aircraft was significantly behind its scheduled position; according to reports from the Incirlik tower, the flight should have reached the Adana radio range at 1540 hours while maintaining flight level 175. The primary factor in the accident was the pilot's inability to maintain precise altitude and positional awareness while attempting to maneuver around cumulus clouds and the turbulence associated with them.
