What happened
The flight originated from Milan-Malpensa Airport at 07:00 local time, traveling eastbound toward Istanbul-Atatürk Airport. During the approach to runway 05, the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 100 feet before performing a right bank that resulted in a stall and contact with the runway surface. The impact caused severe damage to the right main landing gear, which subsequently punctured the right wing.
In response to the damage, the captain attempted a go-around. After reaching an altitude of 3,800 feet, the crew declared an emergency, reporting that the right engine had ceased operation. Shortly thereafter, the right engine ignited. The crew entered a holding pattern over the Marmara Sea for approximately 20 minutes before attempting a second landing on runway 35L. Upon touchdown, the right main gear collapsed, causing the aircraft to slide along the runway and veer to the right. The aircraft performed a 180-degree turn before coming to a stop in a grassy area. There were no fatalities among the 97 occupants, though the aircraft was a total loss.
Findings
Investigation into the incident suggests that the loss of control during the final segment of the flight was triggered by wake turbulence generated by a Boeing 787 that had landed on runway 05 just prior to the arrival.
