What happened
During an approach to Tejgaon AFB, the flight crew encountered challenging meteorological conditions characterized by heavy rainfall and significant turbulence. As the aircraft progressed through the final segment of its descent, it experienced a sudden loss of altitude, resulting in a collision with the runway surface.
The force of the impact caused structural damage, specifically resulting in both wings being partially sheared off. Following the strike, the aircraft came to a stop on the airfield. The incident resulted in five injuries, while the remaining occupants of the aircraft were not harmed during the event.
Findings
At the time of the accident, a squall line was traversing the area surrounding the airport, producing intense precipitation and unstable air. Investigations into the flight path suggest that the primary factor leading to the loss of control during the short final phase was strong downdrafts and/or windshear.
