On February 9, 2020, a Boeing 737-500, registration VQ-BPS, was operating flight UTA 595 from Moscow Vnukovo to Usinsk. The flight crew completed medical examinations and pre-flight preparations at Vnukovo, noting that weather conditions along the route and at the destination were suitable for flight. At the time of departure, the aircraft's takeoff weight was 53,095 kg with a center of gravity of 26.56% MAC.
During the approach to Usinsk, the crew noted via NOTAMs that the glide slope radio beacon for runway 13 was non-operational and the approach lights were out of service. After receiving descent instructions from the airport's medical dispatch point and landing clearance from approach control "Vyshka," the aircraft proceeded with the landing approach.
As the aircraft reached 32 meters from the runway threshold, the main landing gear collided with a 1.1-meter-high snow berm that had been formed during runway clearing operations. Following the impact, the aircraft came to rest on the runway 30 meters from the threshold. There were no injuries to the crew.
The collision resulted in the collapse of the main landing gear struts while the aircraft was moving on the runway.
