Runway excursion of aircraft during landing in Manitoba

No fatalities • Norway House, Canada • Landing (descent or approach)

A flight traveling from Winnipeg to Norway House experienced a runway excursion during the landing roll, resulting in landing gear collapse but no injuries.

What happened

During a daylight flight from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Norway House, Manitoba, an aircraft carrying seven passengers and two crew members experienced an excursion following touchdown on Runway 05. At approximately 08:34 CST, the flight crew engaged the propeller reverse thrust. Immediately following this action, the aircraft began veering toward the left side of the runway.

Despite efforts by the crew to stabilize the aircraft and regain directional control, the plane drifted off the paved surface. The aircraft then traveled through an area of loose snow and crossed a shallow ditch. The momentum carried the plane up a rocky embankment, where it eventually came to a stop on its belly. The impact caused all three landing gears to collapse.

All nine people on board were able to evacuate the aircraft via the over-wing exits and the main door stairway. There were no injuries reported following the incident.

Findings

  • The aircraft veered left specifically after the selection of propeller reverse thrust.

Probable cause

The aircraft lost directional control during the landing roll following the application of reverse thrust.
