What happened
During an approach to Thompson, MB, an Erimeter Aviation Metro II carrying 17 individuals was subjected to fluctuating airspeeds and turbulence. While the first officer was initially operating the aircraft, the captain assumed control at an altitude of 200 feet above ground level. At the time of the takeover, the aircraft was positioned to the left of the centerline and at an excessive altitude.
In an attempt to correct the approach, the captain increased engine power. The aircraft subsequently completed the landing on runway 23, near the intersection of runway 32, with significant force. Following the arrival at the apron, a leak involving fuel was identified.
Findings
An inspection of the aircraft revealed several areas of structural damage, specifically involving the engine mounts, the wing leading edge, the wing-fuselage attachment point, and the wheel wells. There were no injuries reported among the occupants. The incident occurred amidst varying wind conditions, with recorded winds shifting from 010 degrees at 15-20 knots to 350 degrees at 9 knots during the period surrounding the flight.
