Runway overrun involving four-engine aircraft

No fatalities • Manado-Sam Ratulangi, Indonesia • Landing (descent or approach)

A four-engine aircraft overran the runway after landing past the threshold, resulting in heavy damage but no injuries.

What happened

During the landing phase of the flight, a four-engine aircraft touched down approximately 520 metres beyond the runway threshold. Following the touchdown, the crew was unable to decelerate the plane within the available runway length. This lack of stopping distance led to a runway excursion where the aircraft overran the paved surface.

As the aircraft exited the runway, it struck a ditch located 180 metres from the end of the runway. The impact with the terrain caused significant structural damage to the airframe. Despite the severity of the excursion, all 16 occupants on board managed to evacuate the wreckage without sustaining any injuries.

Findings

  • The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
  • The primary factor in the accident was the landing distance required exceeding the available runway length due to the touchdown occurring too far down the runway.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to stop within the remaining runway area after touching down 520 metres past the threshold.
