Runway excursion at Istanbul-Atatürk Airport

No fatalities • Istanbul-Atatürk, Turkey • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft failed to stop after landing on a wet runway at Istanbul-Atatürk Airport, resulting in a runway overrun and significant damage to the airframe.

What happened

During the landing phase at Istanbul-Atatürk Airport, an aircraft touched down on runway 24. Due to recent rainfall, the runway surface was notably wet at the time of the incident. As the aircraft attempted to decelerate, it was unable to come to a complete stop within the runway limits. The aircraft subsequently overran the end of the runway, coming to a halt approximately 30 metres beyond the threshold.

Despite the impact of the excursion, all 50 occupants on board were able to evacuate the aircraft without injury. Following the event, an assessment of the airframe determined that the aircraft was damaged beyond repair.

Findings

  • The primary factor contributing to the excursion was the wet condition of the runway surface caused by rain.
  • The aircraft's inability to maintain stopping distance on the slippery pavement led to the overrun.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to stop on the runway due to reduced braking effectiveness on a wet surface.
