What happened
During an approach to Runway 29 at Kabul Airport, an aircraft arriving from New Delhi-Indira Gandhi Airport encountered intense rainfall while on short final. The flight crew was executing an ILS approach when the plane touched down past the designated touchdown zone. Due to the extended landing position and the weather conditions, the aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently within the available runway length.
As the aircraft overran the runway, it traveled a distance of 285 metres before coming to a halt. During the excursion, the aircraft struck an ILS antenna and suffered the loss of its undercarriage. Despite the impact and the subsequent slide, all 132 occupants were able to evacuate the aircraft without injury. The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
- The aircraft landed beyond the intended touchdown zone.
- Heavy rainfall during the approach phase contributed to the inability to stop the aircraft on the remaining runway surface.
