Runway excursion of PT. Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-300 at Yogyakarta

No fatalities • Yogyakarta, Indonesia • Landing (descent or approach)

A PT. Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-300 experienced a runway excursion during landing at Adisutjipto International Airport, resulting in minor injuries to six passengers.

What happened

On 20 December 2011, a Boeing 737-300, registration PK-CKM, was performing a scheduled passenger service from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. The flight initially encountered severe weather conditions near the destination, leading to a holding pattern and the subsequent closure of Adisutjipto International Airport. Following a diversion to Surabaya for refueling, the aircraft returned to Yogyakarta to attempt a second approach.

During the final approach, the aircraft was observed by radar traveling at 203 knots at 2,700 feet, prompting instructions from the Approach Controller to reduce speed. As the aircraft descended to approximately 1,200 feet, the pilot disengaged the autopilot and autothrottle systems. In the process of adjusting the approach profile, the aircraft experienced a significant increase in descent rate and bank angle, triggering GPWS 'pull up' and sink rate warnings.

The aircraft touched down at 156 knots, which was significantly higher than the target landing speed of 138 knots. Although the spoilers, autobrakes, and thrust reversers were deployed, the pilot determined the aircraft could not stop within the remaining runway length. The pilot executed a left turn, and the aircraft eventually came to a halt 75 meters from the end of the runway, positioned 54 meters left of the centerline. While the majority of the 137 persons on board evacuated via the forward slides, 6 passengers sustained minor injuries. The aircraft sustained major damage to the nose and right main landing gear.

Findings

  • The aircraft landed at a speed exceeding the target approach parameters.
  • Excessive touchdown speed prevented the aircraft from stopping within the available runway distance.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to stop on the runway due to a touchdown speed that significantly exceeded the target landing velocity.
