Runway excursion involving aircraft at Makassar Airport

No fatalities • Makassar (Ujung Pandang), Indonesia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced a runway excursion during landing at Ujung Pandang Airport following an asymmetrical flap condition.

What happened

During a flight originating from Jakarta, the crew initiated their descent toward Makassar (Ulam Pandang) Airport. While performing the approach to runway 31, the flight crew attempted to extend the flaps from 15° to 30°. During this maneuver, the captain identified an asymmetry between the left and right flap surfaces. In response to this mechanical discrepancy, the pilot reverted the flap setting back to 15° and proceeded with the landing approach.

Upon touchdown, the aircraft struck the runway with significant force to the left of the centerline and underwent two subsequent bounces. The aircraft subsequently lost directional control and veered off the paved surface. During the excursion, the right main landing gear was lost. The aircraft eventually came to a halt several dozen meters from the runway.

Findings

All 164 occupants of the aircraft were evacuated without injury. However, the aircraft sustained extensive damage that rendered it a total loss. The impact caused the left main landing gear to puncture the fuel tank, and the structural integrity of the fuselage was compromised by significant deformation. The primary factor contributing to the excursion was the asymmetrical flap condition encountered during the approach.

Probable cause

An asymmetrical flap configuration during the approach led to a hard landing and subsequent loss of directional control on the runway.
