Aircraft accident during training flight near Rasht

4 fatalities • Rasht, Iran • Landing (descent or approach)

A training flight departing from Tehran-Mehrabad Airport resulted in a fatal crash near Rasht after a landing gear malfunction and subsequent fire.

What happened

A training mission originated from Tehran-Mehrabad Airport at 12:33 local time, bound for Rasht. After the crew successfully finished 14 touch-and-go maneuvers, the aircraft attempted an approach to the destination airport. During this phase, the landing gear was not deployed. Consequently, the aircraft performed a belly landing on runway 09, sliding for approximately 2,100 meters over a duration of 30 seconds.

Following the initial impact, the crew attempted a second takeoff. As the aircraft gained altitude, a fire ignited in the rear section of the fuselage. In response to the emergency, the crew manually extended the undercarriage and received clearance to return to runway 09. However, during the final approach, the aircraft lost stability and altitude, eventually crashing into a field situated 5 km before the runway threshold. The accident resulted in four fatalities and three injuries. The aircraft was completely destroyed during the event.

Findings

The sequence of events was initiated by the failure to lower the landing gear during the approach following training maneuvers, which led to the initial runway excursion and subsequent structural fire.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by a failure to deploy the landing gear during approach, leading to a belly landing, a subsequent fuselage fire, and loss of control during an emergency return.
