Wings Air ATR 72-600 Runway Excursion at Semarang

No fatalities • Semarang-Ahmad Yani, Indonesia • Landing (descent or approach)

An ATR 72-600 operated by Wings Air veered off the runway centerline during landing at Ahmad Yani International Airport, resulting in an emergency evacuation.

What happened

On 25 December 2016, a scheduled passenger flight, number WON 1896, operated by PT. Wings Abadi Airlines (Wings Air), was traveling from Bandung to Semarang. The aircraft, an ATR 72-600 with registration PK-WGW, was carrying 68 passengers and a crew of four. The flight proceeded normally from departure until the approach phase.

During the approach to Ahmad Yani International Airport, the air traffic controller noted light rain over the airfield. The aircraft was cleared for an RNAV approach to runway 13. Upon reaching the final approach, the tower controller informed the crew that the runway surface was wet and provided wind information. The pilot requested a reduction in approach light intensity, which was granted.

At 1124 UTC, the aircraft made contact with the runway but experienced a bounce. Following a third bounce, the pilot attempted a go-around maneuver, during which the aircraft touched the runway again. During this sequence, the aircraft drifted right of the runway centerline and eventually came to a halt near taxiway D. The tower controller observed an unusual tilt in the aircraft's profile, noting the right wing appeared lower than the left.

Recognizing the emergency, the tower controller alerted the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) personnel. The crew kept the engines running temporarily to maintain cabin lighting while awaiting assistance. Following instructions from the tower, the engines were shut down as ARFF personnel arrived to facilitate the evacuation. There were no fatalities reported, and the evacuation of all 72 people on board was completed approximately ten minutes after the aircraft stopped.

Findings

  • The runway surface was wet due to light rain.
